Despite being one of the smaller continents, the varied landscapes which characterise Europe make for some amazing views. Europe also has plenty to offer for family holidays, even when the weather’s a little on the chilly side. Often, the best way to explore Europe is by car, but which routes are best for keeping holidaymakers young and old entertained? Here are three examples:

Switzerland

Geneva, on the border with France, is a great starting point. From there, you make your way through the Bernese Alps for the first two days before reaching the village of Saint-Cergues. Your next port of call should be the Jura Mountains, which are excellent for walking through when making a pit stop. Then you should head to Gruyeres, home of the famous cheese.

Taking the kids to Jungfrau Park just outside the town is a good idea to keep them occupied. Afterwards, you should head to Col des Mosses mountain pass before making your way back to Geneva.

When in Switzerland, wintry weather could affect your journey. According to Industry expert Mike Callaghan Head of Argus Car Hire:

“In Switzerland, avalanches can happen during mid-winter. If involved in an accident where the police aren’t needed, you must fill in a European Accident Claim Form in order to recoup any costs.

“Also know that you must beep your horn before heading towards a sharp bend with limited visibility during the daytime. Flashing your headlights is the appropriate thing to do at night”, he added.

France

The best route for a road trip here should encompass at least part of the French Riviera on the south coast. Starting in Geneva, you should head west towards the picturesque Lake Annecy and visit the town of Annecy, which has a market, museums and more to keep everyone interested. From there, heading south to Chambery and Comb Laval with its Cliffside roads is a must.

After that, you should be en route to Monte Carlo and the French Riviera via Avignon, which has its own festival every July. Saint Tropez should be your penultimate stop before arriving in the playground of the rich and famous.

Germany

Germany is famous for its autobahns. What better way to explore them by driving between four of the biggest cities – Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Berlin. As it’s a long way, the kids might succumb to boredom. However, using some print & cut road trip games should keep them from complaining!

Berlin is home to the Mercedes-Benz Museum, while Frankfurt has plenty of parks for the kids to play in. When finishing in Berlin, there’s no end of landmarks to explore such as the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag and Pergamon Museum.
