Paris may be the shopper’s paradise, but even just the most cursory glance down boutique-lined Avenue Montaigne could have you blowing your budget faster than you can say ‘Chanel’. The savvy shoppers of Paris tend to save their spending for the famous city-wide sales, as well as the many vintage and second-hand shops that tourists to the city miss while they’re hurrying down to Louis Vuitton.
Naturally, the vintage shops of Paris are as chic as their full-priced counterparts, and there are some real bargains to be discovered for those that venture through their doors. However, as the coolest of these stores are often tucked away from the main streets, let me share with you some of my favourites – just try to leave a few cute things for me, okay?
Mamie Blue, 69 rue de Rochechouart
Vintage clothing from the 50’s and 60’s is the order of the day at Mamie Blue, and the entire store is dedicated to the elegance of that era – including the personal style of shop owner, Brigitte. A little down the street you’ll find Mamie Blue’s sister boutique, Mamie, which offers even more bygone-era bargains.
Episode, 12 rue Tiquettone
The people behind Episode have created every thrifty person’s dream store, as the racks of clothing are sorted by colour and size – meaning no more disappointment when an eye-catching shirt is seven sizes too big. There are lots of rooms to get through too, so you’ll be even more grateful for the streamlined shopping experience after arriving on flights to Paris.
Free’P’Star, 20 rue de Rivoli
Prepare to rub shoulders with Paris’ trendiest shoppers – whether you like it or not – at Free’P’Star, a cramped but ultra-cool thrift store that has a number of locations in the city. It’s worth putting your claustrophobia to one side to rifle through the racks here, because Free’P’Star is known for having possibly the most low-priced vintage and second-hand offerings in the city.
Guerrisol, 19 Avenue de Clichy
The biggest second-hand shop in Paris is no longer a well-kept secret, but you could still find plenty of cheap, on-trend pieces here from throughout the decades. Row after row of shoes, accessories and clothing will mean you’ll have to spare an hour or so for your visit here, but those fabulously unique finds are totally worth it.
Rag, 81 rue St Honoré
Catering for the more discerning shopper, Rag’s vintage ballgowns and pre-loved designer shoes may not be at traditional thrift-store prices, but they’re still a fraction of their original cost. Expect to see some sought-after brands here, and also to leave with a couple of irresistible pieces for your own wardrobe.
