Rumor has it that the Mayans had predicted the world to end on December 21, 2012.
I wanted to see if I should start maxing out the credit cards or not, so I went to the Mayan Ruins of Tikal in Peten, Guatemala to ask an expert.
We had a great tour guide at the ruins named Donnie “Speedy” Gonzales, and he broke down the truth behind all the “End of the World” hype.
He said that the Mayans did not predict the end of the world, just the end of an era. This era is a period of 400 years on the Mayan Calendar called a Baktun, and we are completing the 13th Baktun (Not the 14th as it says in the video) this December 21, 2012.
He also said the Mayans predicted a worldly transformation on this date, where the earth and its inhabitants may undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation, and will “be more conscious of their neighborhood.” In other words, a focus on the greater good!
I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for this magnetic shift!
Much more about my trip to the Tikal Ruins in Peten, Guatemala coming soon.

If by “the end of the world” we mean a shift away from self interest and insular thinking to an awareness of those around us and an interest in the betterment of all, bring on the end of the world!
Thank you for sharing.
I couldn’t agree more B!
They are even throwing some serious “end of the world” parties here in Tikal. I should have thought of jumping on the wagon a long time ago and I could have made some good money.
Sounds like the end of the world could be a good thing! The hype for all of this is fun and many people will capitalize on it. However, I do appreciate the history lesson here.
I want to celebrate Christmas and am traveling on New Year’s so I hope the prediction isn’t true. I’m not going to cancel any plans 🙂

Normally I do not read post on blogs, however I would like to say that this write-up very forced me to take a look at and do it! Your writing taste has been surprised me. Thank you, very great article.
I guess the world didn’t end. We trekked all the way to El Mirador to be there on the last day of the calendar, brutal trek but the largest pyramid in the Maya world is quite a sight. “The end” was somewhat uneventful as we have all found out by now. Good thing we splurged for the return ticket.
