Rottnest Island Day Trip

The Quokka is considered to be the “happiest animal on the planet,” and Rottnest Island in Western Australia is one of the only places in the world where you can find them in their natural habitat.

So, while I was staying in Perth I decided to make the day trip out to go see these furry little marsupials.

As you see from the video, I took a bus and a train from Perth to the small city of Fremantle – where I ended up (fortunately), with a few hours to spare thanks to me not checking the ferry schedule before leaving the house (Rottnest Express).

Fremantle is a funky little place with an artistic vibe and young spirit for a sleepy port city. Its main attraction here is the weird and wonderful Fremantle Market.

From loaded cotton candy, Bánh mi sandwiches, ramen soup, and much, much more, I ate my way around the stalls until it was time to catch the ferry to Rottnest Island.

With only 100 permanent residents, no public cars allowed, and given I was there during low season (July), I was able to wander around for hours without seeing anyone outside a few surfers – It was beautiful!

As the sun began to set, quokkas came out from everywhere and they couldn’t care less that I was around.

Eventually I made my way to Pinky Beach to watch the most amazing sunset.

I ended up catching the last ferry back to Fremantle and stuck around town for awhile to meet-up with some local friends for a few beers at a great place called Norfolk.

It was the perfect ending to a great day in Western Australia!
