From the translucent waters of Lake Titicaca to the lights of Machu Picchu, the magic of the land of the Incas can be easily discovered by rail and river, in an escape that comes with the unmistakable flavour of extra comfort.

On the muddy banks of the port of Iquitos, crammed into a chaos of colours, decayed carcasses of large boats that ply the Amazon with supplies and passengers bypass the ship. Given the slow pace of the river, the outputs are organized in small skiffs. The passenger ship approaches the canoe fishermen and the dolphins, and you find yourself observing the majestic blue and yellow macaws closer than you have ever imagined. This is just one of the highlights of a luxury escape to Peru by rail and river. Other features include ancient Inca sites, magnificent trains and a full immersion in the Amazonian wildlife.

A few kilometres north of Cuzco, from where such a journey is very likely to begin, lays the beautiful valley of the Urubamba River. It is called Valle Sagrado de los Incas, which means the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The valley is located 2700 meters above sea level, but you can already feel the influence of Amazonian air. The climate is warmer and more humid than in Cuzco, which is only an hour away by car. This protected area is perfect for agriculture and this is the reason it was the mainstay of the Incan civilization.

Though this valley has become a huge tourist area, agriculture is still abundant. Fertile fields and tropical flowers contrast sharply with the Andes Mountains. As the valley is narrow, a sophisticated system of terraces on the mountain slopes was used by the Incas to derive the greatest possible benefit from the land. These terraces last until today and are still used by local farmers. This is an excellent occasion to sample some of the Peruvian cuisine, most of which is based on ancient recipes. The valley is full of little-known archaeological sites and activities such as white-water rafting are available.

  1. Peru can be a dream not only because of Machu Picchu: you will hardly find another place with so beautiful untouched nature that makes your heart soars. Except perhaps New Zeeland but what it lacks are kind and friendly people so open to your needs and just a conversation.
