An Argentine Birthday Party

The Argentine Birthday Crew

Saturday night Sergio and Mariangela invited me to a true portena birthday party for their argentine boss. Pretty much everyone at the party was Argentine so it was a great environment for me to learn more about the culture (and practice my Spanish).

As expected, their was an abundance of empanadas, pizza, wine and Fernet. All of which I felt obligated to try and re-try throughout the night. For the good of my “cultural research” of course.

They say you shouldn’t switch drinks throughout the night, but I think that’s stupid, especially when there are so many tasty choices. I started out with red wine, then switched to a few Fernet and colas (still an acquired taste), then I transitioned into some delicious Caipirinhas. However, the party really didn’t start rocking until someone whipped up a variation of Batidas, an amazing fruit smoothie cocktail. This is by-far my new favorite summertime cocktail. It’s a Brazilian drink that’s made by blending condensed milk, coconut milk, sugar, fruit (peaches in this case), ice and cachaca, which is the national spirit of Brazil.

With some liquid courage my Spanish skills and dancing ability vastly improved. I got to practice my salsa and morenga. This would have been a great night in itself… although, it turned out to be just the start of the best 24 hours i’ve had yet in Buenos Aires…
