Getting off the Beaten Track in Hotels around Brazil

Traveling round Brazil is an experience not easily forgotten. The culture, the history, the people, the atmosphere – it all blends together to create an experience many travelers never forget, and makes them return again and again.

If you’re thinking of traveling to Brazil, one of the first things you will have to sort out is accommodation. Hotels in Brazil come in all shapes and sizes, from the most luxurious wallet-stretching hotels and resorts, to the budget accommodation for shoestring-budget travelers.

So, where are the best places to stay in Brazil? Well, first up, it is a big country. Huge. With more than 201 million people, Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world by population, and is also the fifth largest country by area, with 8.5 million square kilometers.

Which makes it difficult to give a list of the best hotels Brazil has to offer. However, explaining the type of hotel you may want to stay in Brazil could help you in your quest when looking for accommodation.

Staying in a pousada in Brazil could be a great choice. Meaning a “place to stay” or a “place to land”, pousadas are found all over Brazil, and offer a variety of accommodation types, including B&Bs, inns, guesthouses, eco-lodges and boutique hotels.

Pousadas usually cost about the same as similar class hotels, but they offer a bit more individuality and character, as they are individually run and managed. They are usually much smaller than regular hotels, some with less than ten suites.

A pousada will have all the “standard” hotel amenities – beds, en-suite, air conditioning or ceiling fan, and hotel furniture. Many will have pools, bar fridges, TVs and hammocks, and the higher-end pousadas will have cable TV, room service, laundry service and so on.

If you are in the Alagoas region, check out Pousada Côté Sud for its chic design and infinity pool overlooking the beach. If you are going to the Amazon region, try the Amazon Tupana Lodge, a rustic jungle hideaway on the banks of the Tupana River, or the Pousada Uacari, a floating lodge in the Mamiraua reserve, where you can see the native uacari monkey.

Or if you fancy a trip into Brazil’s colonial past, stay at the Fazenda Catuçaba, a beautifully refurbished colonial fazenda in the hills outside São Paulo, or perhaps the Alcino Estalagem in Bahia, a colonial-style inn with great atmosphere and apparently, the best breakfast in Brazil.
