Where will you go?

Let me say, this is NOT the most important chapter. Your location just isn’t that important.

You will meet people who will suggest new places. You will be drawn to certain locations more than others.

And, worst case scenario… you can always fly home.

Your attitude and the people you meet will ultimately determine your travel experiences more than any destination will.

I have been unhappy in beautiful places and beyond overjoyed in the most basic of locations.

In this article, we’re going to discuss what are the best countries for solo travelers.

I know that sounds crazy given you have to pick a place, but honestly, let me tell you; do not spend too much time worrying about the perfect place.

For some of you, you already know where you want to go – you can feel it.

For me, I had always dreamed of visiting Greece. I was obsessed with Greek history and culture. So, I made sure to save up and plan my scheduling around a side-trip to Greece while studying abroad in London.

Whether you have a particular reason like family ties, iconic landmarks, or a life-long dream, if you already have your destination set, feel free to move on.

Destination Selection Questions:

Just like in the last section, I suggest you write these questions down and go back over them.

Work through your thoughts and emotions by writing stuff down – it is incredibly helpful in finding clarity.

1. In your wildest travel dreams, if you were absolutely unbound by time and money, where would you go? What would you do?

List 5 places you would visit along with the experiences you would like to have while you are there.

It doesn’t even have to be a real place.

Example: I want to see the reindeer migration in Northern Russia (real one for me).

2. What is your budget right now?

We will discuss this more coming up, but your savings/income will have the biggest impact on where you can go.

For example, if you’re on a tight budget, six months in The Philippines or Central America is much more achievable than the same amount of time in Norway, Iceland or Japan.

3. What can’t you live without? What is non-negotiable?

First, if you need fast Wifi to earn a living while traveling, then you need to take that into consideration.

To be honest, it can be frustrating dealing with limit internet connection in certain countries and regions around the world. I would suggest doing your research first.

What else is vital for you to be happy, healthy, and/or productive?

Do you want to learn another language or would you prefer to be in an English speaking location?

Do you need to have access to a gym, vegetarian restaurants, reliable public transportation?

Figure out what you absolutely can’t live without, and then be sure the destination you want has it covered.

My Recommendations:

If you want some guidance on where to go, here are 20 destination ideas I would recommend (in no particular order)…

*This isn’t necessarily a list of my favorite cities, but rather a variety of city options based on different factors and affordability. There are also very popular expat and digital nomad destinations like Bali, Playa del Carmen and Chiang Mai not mentioned in this list. This list is simply to help you get the wheels spinning!

Again, another great resource to determine locations is NomadList.com, they break down different cities and locations for digital nomads and remote workers.
