The state of Florida more than lives up to its unofficial title; the subtropical climate that prevails throughout the north and central regions (the south is truly tropical) means hours and hours of sunshine, which nurtures golden tans and nourishes the vast orange groves that characterize the place. Once a swampy wilderness, it is now one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, with its pearly white beaches, mangroves, everglades, bustling, hip cites and laid-back keys. Read on to find out what Club Med Florida Holidays can offer you and how best to enjoy the break.
Sandpiper Bay
This luxurious resort sits on the St Lucie River on the state’s east coast and offers guests as much relaxation as it does activity. If you lean more towards the former, then there are two swimming pools (one for adults only for maximum peace and quiet), both with solariums and sun loungers where you can luxuriate while sipping a cool cocktail. There’s also a L’Occitane spa on site with a Zen area, Hammam, nail bar and hair salon, as well as individual treatment rooms.
If you’re feeling the need for activity on the other hand, there’s a large spectrum of sports to partake in, from tennis and golf to windsurfing and wakeboarding. There’s even a flying trapeze academy.
The deluxe accommodation overlooks either the beach or the gardens, which are bursting with lush foliage, including bougainvillea and masses of palms.
If you wish to explore neighbouring Miami or beyond, this is an excellent base from which to do so – the resort even offers limousine rides to the city.
Miami
This hip, dazzling, sun-soaked metropolis is just over an hour from Sandpiper Bay and is the second largest city in the state. Its sun-kissed residents work and play hard – though they favour the latter.
For shopping in Miami, head for the Coconut Grove, a charming neighbourhood established in the 19th century and now home to designer and vintage boutiques, as well as the beauteous palm-filled Villa Vizcaya Park.
For street festivals and authentic Hispanic cuisine, visit Little Havana. Another destination on your itinerary should be the Art Deco district, where the pastel coloured 1930s and ’40s buildings will dazzle you with their timeless, modernist beauty.
Orlando
The state’s largest inland city, Orlando, is famed as a great family destination, boasting not one, but two theme parks in Universal Studios and Disney World, set in the Bay Lake area.
Of course, there’s much more to Orlando than that. For art and culture enthusiasts, there’s the Orlando Museum of Art, which showcases permanent collections of Native American Art, whereas the Charles Hosmer More Museum of American Art offers up the most comprehensive collection of works designed by Louis Tiffany, the famed Jeweller. As well as his iconic and instantly recognisable lamps and glassware, you can even see the amazing Byzantine-style chapel interior, which he was commissioned to produce for the 1893 Chicago Exposition.
For a relaxing interlude, you should head for the Harry P. Leu Gardens, which comprises of 50-acres of lush greenery, the state’s largest rose garden (the scent is astounding) and a butterfly farm.
Florida’s eternally sun-dappled beaches couldn’t be more inviting, but there’s much more to discover here besides – so make the most of what there is for a truly fulfilling break.
