I write this post from a hammock overlooking the Florida Bay. There’s a boat coming into the Harbor that looks like it’s seen better days. I wonder what life would be like if I lived on a boat? I could get a cool flag and a sexy deckhand and a diving board.

I’m sorry if I go off on tangents here, something about swinging in a hammock at sunset gives your mind the freedom to wander.

Key Largo is the kind of place that allows for such digression. A place about as laid back and relaxed, as you will find here in the great U.S. of A.

To capture the essence of Key Largo, I could have just filmed myself sitting in this hammock, sipping cocktails while the sun turned the sky into beautiful shades of reds, oranges and purples.

Instead, I decided to be a little more proactive and show you a few things that make Key Largo such a great spot to escape to.

Here are my favorite things to do in Key Largo:

5. Go Snorkeling or Scuba Diving

Key Largo has had a long history of marine conservation, making it one of the best spots for snorkeling and scuba diving. From shipwrecks to live coral reefs, there’s a crazy amount of underwater exploration to do. The most popular dive attractions are the Statue of Christ of the Abyss, Spiegel Grove, Molasses Reef, Benwood Wreck, Bibb and Duane, and “The Elbow,” where I snorkeled over several historic shipwrecks.

4. Go Backcountry Fishing

Hey, look what I caught!

The mangroves of the Florida Everglades are home to some pretty spectacular fish. When you’re done swimming with them, take a charter out and do some backcountry fishing for dinner. I had two bull sharks snap my line, but managed to catch three real nice keepers.  If you go fishing, take a charter with Capt. Tony DelosSantos of Lyin’ Hawaiian Charters. He’s a great guy who knows the Everglades (and where the fish are) like the back of his hand. I want to come back for Lobster season sometime, which runs from August until March.

3. Eat the Freshest Seafood

Yum. Yummy. Tasty. Delicious. Mouthwatering. What more can I say? Whether you catch your own, buy some from the Key Largo Fisheries or just stop into any of the outstanding seafood restaurants around town.

2. Experience the Happy Hour & Sunsets

Nothing beats Happy Hour on the water in Key Largo

There are few things that the people of Key Largo do better than Happy Hour. There are so many great, seaside tiki bars that offer up cheap drinks with incredible sunset views that you could spend a week doing just that… hey, that’s not a bad idea!
