When we arrived in Paro, Bhutan, our guides took us directly to a restaurant for lunch and a few welcome beers in downtown Paro.
At that first meeting, we went over our itinerary for the week, and they asked if there was anything in particular we’d like to do.
They told us that one of the King’s favorite past-times is mountain biking through the hills and valleys around the city, and thought we would like to do something similar.
So, on one of our last days in Bhutan, after a great hiking day to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, we set out to explore on two wheels.
Joining us on the journey was a professional mountain biker, who had finished in the top 5 of the famous “Tour of the Dragon” bike race – A grueling 250 km event that traverses across the western part of Bhutan.
Needless to say, he kept our pace high and our breaks low, as we rode through the beautiful Bhutanese countryside.
We started in Paro, and rode up the mountains and down into the valleys until we reached the awesomely named village of Haa.
While at some points we did load the bikes into the following cars, for time sake, we rode for most of the day and everybody was beat by dinner time.
And although we didn’t spot the king along our ride, it was still an absolutely great day, filled with fresh air and adventure.
Here’s a quick video clip of our day of mountain biking in Bhutan…

love this! your blog is amazing. So glad I found it!
There is something about mountain biking that fascinates me so much. I first learned about the concept in a video game. I would love an opportunity like this to go mountain biking in reality.
