Each and every Travel Deeper adventure has been a direct result of the previous one.

I moved to Colombia after rooming with two great Colombians in Argentina. I volunteered in Ecuador, Bolivia and Guatemala after living a very sinful lifestyle in Colombia. And, I moved to Brazil after discovering the importance of the World Cup from every Latin American country I’ve lived in.

This mission will be no different. Thanks to an opportunity during the World Cup, I had the chance to meet and work with a great group of people from Australia.

They were crazy fun, incredibly inviting and wouldn’t stop talking about how great their country is.

So, it’s time for me to go see for myself! Next week I’ll be flying to Sydney to embark on a new adventure around Australia!

My goal is to experience everything from the urban lifestyles of Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, to the natural beauty of the Great Barrier Reef and rugged Outback.

With the ultimate aim as always of going from Tourist to Townie!

Apart from the obvious stereotypes and stories, I don’t know much about Australia.

I know they have a lot of dangerous creatures down there, so I’m going to try and stay clear of them. Especially snakes, I absolutely hate snakes.

Other than that, I have no set plan. I will touch down in Sydney next week and figure everything out from there.

If you want to follow along on all the adventures, I will be posting daily on Instagram and Snapchat (@GarethChat), and weekly “Travel Deeper – Australia” episodes on YouTube, so be sure to follow and subscribe to those.

From Australia, my plan is to hop over the Tasman Sea to explore New Zealand, and hopefully more of the South Pacific from there. But we can talk more about this when the time comes.

In the meantime, any travel tips to help me Travel Deeper in Australia and New Zealand would be greatly appreciated.

Have you been before? If so, what should I do? If not, what would you want to do?

Cheers Mate!

  1. Hire a car, make your way to the the Great Ocean Road, near Melbourne. This place is completely wonderful and you can spend a lot of time there. It’s a road with 300km with unbelievable places to see. Maybe a good idea is to do it by bike (when you are already there).
Could also suggest to you: Jervis Bay, Hunter Valley and Blue Mountains (Sydney area). Gold Coast, Great Barrier Reef and Uluru are also famous spots.

At NZL, you definitely need to know Hobbiton near Matamata area (Hobbit movie set), the cities of Rotorua and Taupo, both great spots to do have some good adventures. Over there, try the Huka Falls and Creators of the moon.
An, if you have the chance, Whakatane volcano is a once in a life time journey (it’s in the middle of the sea).

  2. We’ve been campervanning through Australia for about a month now with 2 more months to go (NZ is next). Started in Sydney as well and currently on the Great Ocean Road (which is amazing, don’t miss it!).

Make sure to hike the Blue Mountains near Sydney. It’s the most recent post on our blog. Take a quick look at our photos and you should be convinced 🙂

    Enjoy your time in Australia!

  3. Absolutely Australia have a lot of dangerous creatures, other than the Australia is a wonderful place for a vacation, I think you have reached Sydney and started the celebration.

  4. Here is a tip for NZ seeing as though you are well into Aus. Done a road trip before from Christchurch to Queenstown (actually did it twice). Absolutely stunning. Highly recommend fox glacier. Lake tekapo is a nice quiet scenic spot with a good japanese restaurant. Personally I think Queenstown is a bit too touristy.

  5. In Sydney you MUST do the Bridge Climb and bike tour around the city. Melbourne check out the famous dinner on a trolley, one of the greatest experiences of my life! Uluru and Kata Tjuta in the Outback are definitely highlights. In the Great Barrier Reef go to the Daintree Rainforest, Palm Cove, and Port Douglas….ENJOY!

  6. Ayyyyyyyyyyyyyy, welcome to Australia! I’m from Brisbane, so if you’re ever in the city, I’d be totally down for showing you around! As for other parts of the country that I would 1000% recommend… you have to check out Kakadu National Park – by far my favourite place in Oz. Incredible hiking. Beautiful waterholes. Red dust. Huge trees. Beautiful animals. The Sydney Bridge climb is pretty epic, and Bondi is a touristy thing that you should definitely tick off your list (though I would argue that the beaches up in Queensland are the best in Australia!). Melbs is probably my favourite city, and it’s the coffee capital of Australia, so be sure to hit up a little hipster cafe when you’re there 🙂
