The Best Getaways in Upstate New York (Near Rochester)

Hotels You Need to Visit close to Rochester, Syracuse, and Buffalo!

If you’re in Rochester and craving a little escape — something with better views, better food, and maybe a little less traffic — you don’t have to go far. Just an hour or two south, the Finger Lakes region is packed with cozy inns, luxury resorts, and lakeside hideaways that make you wonder why you don’t get away more often.

Whether you’re looking for a romantic weekend, a solo recharge, or just a good excuse to drink local wine by the water, here are a few of my favorite getaways in Upstate New York that are totally worth the drive.

The Best Getaways in Upstate New York (Near Rochester)
A beautiful day at Hotel Canandaigua!

1. Hotel Canandaigua (Tapestry Collection by Hilton)

Let’s start with the new kid on the lake — Hotel Canandaigua. This spot sits right on Canandaigua Lake and somehow manages to feel modern and chill at the same time. The rooms are bright and comfy (some with balconies overlooking the water like mine), there’s a pool that becomes the social hub on summer weekends, and The Cove restaurant serves solid local dishes and cocktails that hit perfectly at sunset.

It’s less than an hour from Rochester but feels like a full-on vacation. If you’re the type who likes resort vibes without the resort snobbery, this is your move.

2. The Lake House on Canandaigua

If you want to splurge a little, The Lake House is your place. Think lakefront luxury with a designer touch — firepits, heated pool, incredible spa, and one of the best restaurants in the region (Rose Tavern).

It’s peaceful, beautifully designed, and has that “I’m definitely coming back here” energy. Basically, if you want to impress your partner, this is where you book.

3. Skaneateles Fields Resort & Spa

A little farther east, Skaneateles Fields Resort & Spa is one of those spots that feels like a secret wellness retreat. Everything’s clean, modern, and very “breathe in the fresh air and let go of your city stress”.

You can do yoga in the fields, eat fresh-from-the-farm meals, and wander into downtown Skaneateles for boutique shopping and that postcard-perfect lake view. It’s the kind of weekend that feels longer than it is — in the best way possible.

4. Mirbeau Inn & Spa Skaneateles

For pure romance and relaxation, Mirbeau Inn & Spa is tough to beat. Picture a French countryside estate dropped right in the middle of Upstate New York — ponds, gardens, fireplaces, and a spa that might actually make you forget what day it is.

The rooms are cozy, the restaurant is top-notch, and everything about this place whispers, “Stay one more night.” Perfect for couples… or honestly, anyone who just wants to be pampered for a weekend.

5. The Inns of Aurora Resort & Spa

If you’ve never been to Aurora, you’re missing one of the most peaceful corners of the Finger Lakes. The Inns of Auroraare spread across a few historic homes, each with its own character and charm. The real showstopper, though, is their wellness spa — perched on a hill overlooking Cayuga Lake, surrounded by rolling farmland.

Between kayaking, wine tasting, and outdoor yoga, you might forget you’re still in New York. It’s laid-back luxury done right.

Final Thoughts

Here’s the thing: you don’t need to go far to get away. The Finger Lakes region — just a short drive from Rochester — has everything you need to slow down, breathe a little deeper, and maybe discover a new favorite glass of wine along the way.

Whether it’s the sleek lakeside energy of Hotel Canandaigua, the spa serenity of Skaneateles, or the timeless charm of Aurora, each of these spots captures a different side of Upstate life.

So pack light, cue up your favorite playlist, and go find your next weekend adventure. Upstate’s waiting.
