There are plenty of places to watch a dazzling sunrise or sunset, share a special glass of wine or lose yourself in the scenery. A perfect way to celebrate a new romance for those who met on one of the dating websites Australia has to offer, a short getaway is a great way to strengthen a budding relationship.

The Blue Mountains

A 2.5 hour train ride from the centre of Sydney, the famed Blue Mountains are steeped in cultural history from both white settlement and ancient Aboriginal heritage. There is no shortage of hotels in the area, but if you prefer a cosier experience, there are also many secluded cottages available for holiday rentals.

  • Visit the Three Sisters: this stunning ancient rock formation in the Jamison Valley is named after the Aboriginal story about three sisters turned to stone.
  • Go antiques hunting: the towns of Leura and Katoomba are home to many a quaint antiques store.
  • Take a ride on the Scenic Railway, Scenic Cableway or Scenic Skyway. Hold on to your hats – the Scenic Railway is on one of the steepest inclines in the world, while the Scenic Cableway is the steepest aerial cable car in Australia. Meanwhile, the Scenic Skyway has a glass bottom and will take you across the breathtaking Jamison Valley.

The Barossa Valley

Just outside Adelaide lies the Barossa. Fabled for its perfect blend of European wine-making techniques and Australian climate, the atmosphere and scenery in this verdant wine region make it impossible not to feel totally and utterly relaxed.

  • Take a vineyard tour for two – there are chauffeur-driven tours available between the wineries where you can sample the local produce, stop off for lunch, learn about wine making and take in the views.
  • Visit the beach – it doesn’t take long to get anywhere around Adelaide, and the Barossa is a short drive from Adelaide’s 65km of pristine beach.
  • Have a picnic among the vineyards. The great outdoors will never seem as rich, and what better way to experience a bottle of wine than among the very grapevines that produced it?

Melbourne

The ultimate romantic city break in Oz, Melbourne is characterised by its quirky bars, hidden laneways, excellent cafes and distinctly European feel. Famous for its shopping, food and artistic culture, Melbourne is beautifully laid out and invites its visitors back again and again.

  • Get lost in the laneways in the CBD. With their hole-in-the-wall cafes, boutique shopping and street art, you’ll lose hours as you wander the streets. This is an especially popular pastime for vintage-clothes collectors and coffee lovers.
  • Go bar-hopping. For elegant grandeur try the Gin Palace, while for frilly frippery Madam Brussels is a haven of kitsch. You’ll find an edgier experience in Section 8, the bar housed in a cargo unit.
  • Dine out on Lygon Street. The rumours are all true: you’ll find some of the best Italian food in Australia on this strip. With eateries ranging from family-run restaurants that don’t seem to have changed since the 70s to the height of modern Australian cuisine, you’ll find something to suit every taste and budget.
